ViR - providing Radio for the Victoria for 15 years
June McBlane
June McBlane, a long standing member of ViR, sadly passed away on the 9th of May 2010.
Craig McDougall, Commercial Controller at ViR remembers June:
She was such a special woman and brightened up the day every time I saw her.
She joined the hospital radio station not long after it began in September 1995 and for many years did ward visiting on a Sunday evening, collecting requests from patients. We could always rely on June to come back with bundles of requests and she would look up the songs on the computer then look out the records for the programme.
In addition to her ward visiting on a Sunday, June presented a programme every Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock. She didn't have a technical assistant, she operated the mixing desk, cued up the vinyl records and cds herself and handled the technology in her own unique way. Her presentation style was perfect for hospital radio where she came across as naturally and warmly as she did in person. She started every programme with her theme tune "June is Bustin' Out All Over" from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Carousel".
We could always rely on June to be in and any meetings that she had to attend elsewhere were logged in the diary by her well in advance. If she hadn't seen you for a few weeks, she would give you a long, hard look and ask "where have you been?!" before breaking into a smile.
Her last programme was on the 17th of February this year.
We are all going to miss her very much.
Refurbishment complete!
The repairs and refurbishment of our Office and Studio 2 are now complete, our office now has double glazing and doesn't feel like a wind tunnel! Thank you to the health Board for providing us with a much improved standard of accomodation. We will shortly begin contacting recent volunteer applicants to strengthen our production and presenting teams.
ViR's Most Requested Artists
Our latest chart of the most requested artists once again features Frank Sinatra as the most popular artist (not surprisingly) but contemporary artists like Robbie Williams and Westlife were also in the Top 10. The chart shows the wide variety of music played on ViR. From classical to rock, Daniel O'Donnell to David Gray, there's something for everyone! For the first time we've listed our top 100 requested songs - Click on the link for the full chart rundown.
Requests
There is a request box next to the payphones by Ward 2 on Level E with request forms available for patients and visitors to fill in. These can also be obtained from dispensers at the Queens Park entrance, Battlefield entrance and next to the lifts along from A&E on Level B. If you have a friend or relative in the Victoria Infirmary, you can telephone a request to 0141 201 5730 or fill in our on-line request form.
Volunteers
If you are interested in joining our team at ViR please e-mail us with your name, address and phone number and we'll send you more details and an application pack. Please note you must be over 16. We currently have a fairly long waiting list, but always interested to hear from you if you'd like to join us.
Unwanted CD's
We are always grateful to receive any donations of unwanted CD's. Please get in touch with us at ViR and we can arrange collection. If you have any free CD's from newspapers that you don't want they can be posted in our request box at the Vicky on Level E next to Ward 2!
ViRextra
ViRextra on channel 2 enables us to broadcast live football matches, religious, specialist and minority programmes keeping ViR on channel 1 for all your favourite music.
Discos and Roadshows
ViR's volunteers provide discos and roadshows for community events, schools and private functions like weddings and birthday parties. We are always busy at Halloween, Christmas, Valentines' Day and end of school term but are available for bookings all year round.
Our volunteers give their time free and all donations from such events go towards improving the radio service for the patients at the Victoria. Look out for photographs of the roadshow in action on the web site in the near future.
Sponsorship
Victoria Infirmary Radio welcomes support from individuals and businesses to help improve the radio service to the patients. In addition to this web site, newsletters are distributed to the wards each week and on-air promotions can be broadcast each night. This could be for a one off event or on a regular basis. If you would like to make a donation to ViR, or if you have some prizes which could be given to competition winners, please contact: Craig McDougall, Commercial Controller at craig@victoriainfirmaryradio.co.uk. Alternatively, you can telephone 0141 201 5173 or write to Victoria Infirmary Radio, Langside Road, Glasgow G41 9TY.
Feedback
Victoria Infirmary Radio would like to hear from former patients with their comments on the radio service. We hope to provide a diversity of programmes so that each night there is something for every listener. You can help to improve the service by contacting us by e-mail, writing or calling the station with your thoughts.
Thank You
The volunteers at ViR wish to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at the Victoria Infirmary for their help with our request shows and competitions.
